It's the first time Charles, 73, has requested a new prime minister to form a government; he inherited Liz Truss when he ascended the throne on Sept. 8. Truss resigned after 45 days after losing the Conservative Party's confidence.
Sir Clive Alderson, Sir Edward Young, and Lt. Col. Jonny Thompson accompanied Sunak to the 1844 Room.

Buckingham Palace said after the meeting, "The King met with Rishi Sunak and asked him to create a new government. Mr. Sunak accepted His Majesty's offer as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury."

Charles met with outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose resignation he accepted, according to Buckingham Palace.
