The legendary singer received the Icon Award at the 2022 American Music Awards on Nov. 20. Stevie Wonder, Charlie Puth, and Ari Lennox performed moving tributes for the 73-year-old.

Stevie and Charlie performed "Say You, Say Me," "All Night Long," and "Easy" Melissa Etheridge, Jimmie Allen, Smokey Robinson, Muni Long, Dustin Lynch, and Yola also performed "We Are the World."

Lionel, whose music career spans five decades, reflected on his journey while accepting his award. He began at the AMAs. I'm still at the AMAs 40 years later.

The singer had a message for his successors: "I want to talk to young superstars. God enlightened you. Special light. Few have that light. Hip means now. Inspiring means everlasting."

This is Lionel's 18th AMA trophy. The singer has sold over 125 million albums and won four Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and the first RIAA diamond album award.

American Idol judge enjoyed the full-circle moment before this year's ceremony.

"My career has taken me to arenas worldwide, studio sets, and the AMA stage," he said on Nov. 7. "I remember my first AMAs performance. It was to sing "We Are the World" with my generation's most iconic musicians, so it's surreal to be recognized 36 years later."
