Maya Rudolph "had a bad day" on "Late Show" in 2009. "He misspelled my name, and I was like, I've always loved you. So sad. "I'm embarrassed and mortified," the "Bridesmaid" star, 50, told WSJ.

Rudolph, who joined "SNL" in 1999, struggled with interviews and red-carpet appearances early in her career.

"It seemed like someone stole my soul," she said. "I constructed a persona to protect myself over time." The comic said, "I've improved." I strive to be witty when uncomfortable.

Rudolph doesn't consider herself a celebrity despite her fame. "I'm a working actor, and people know me, but I don't feel like a star," she remarked.

Rudolph was pregnant on "Letterman" in 2009. Today, she has Pearl, 17, Lucille, 12, Jack, 11, and Minnie, 9. The actress told WSJ that she prioritizes family no matter how busy she is.

"I'm not a Pollyanna who always smiles. I became irritated and angry, but I learned I could make a decision, and that's liberating. "Perhaps those who've worked as long as I have fancier cars. I don't know, but I need balance."
