The royal couple and Mayor Michelle Wu lit Boston City Hall and other sites green for their first official event of the trip, counting down to Friday's second annual Earthshot Prize Awards presentation.

Before the lighting ceremony, Prince William, Massachusetts Governor-elect Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and Reverend Mariama White-Hammond spoke briefly.

"Thank you to Mayor Wu and all the hardy Bostonians braving the rain!" William told the enthusiastic audience outside Boston City Hall as he ascended the stage.

"There are two reasons why Boston was the obvious choice to host the Earthshot Prize in its second year," he stated.

Sixty years ago, President John F. Kennedy's "Moonshot" address challenged American inventiveness. "We travel to the moon not because it's easy but because it's hard," he added.
